2015 in images

Last year was not my most productive year as a photographer. I still took over 20000 images but it’s half what I did in 2014. And it’s not because I have not traveled abroad (I went to Ethiopia, Japan, France and Turkey) but I did not go out locally as much as I usually do. My day job kept me busy and I did not have much spare time. Even this blog is suffering from my lack of free time. Finally at the end of February, I was able to compile my best images for 2015. Better late than never is one my motto in life. Interestingly enough, there is a theme that is emerging from my images, I love cityscape (my top 4 images are Tokyo, San Francisco, Nice and San Francisco again). I love man-made structures, you have to go to my volcano image to find a purely...

June Full Moon: Golden State Warriors

June Full Moon: Golden State Warriors

Last night was the full moon for the month of June. I was uncertain about the weather, summer being here, our friend Karl the fog is often present. Exceptionally yesterday was a clear day and stayed clear in the evening. I went again at the same location as last month, looking for a better image. In photography, dedication and stubbornness are essential. The major difference between this month and last, is the lighting of the Coit Tower. The city is celebrating its basketball team, the Golden State Warriors, playing in the NBA Finals for the first time in over 40 years. I had everything lined up but the fog came in to play the trouble-maker. It was late enough so I could get a couple of nice images.

100th post: May full moon

100th post: May full moon

This is my 100th post and if you had told me 2 and half years ago that would have written 100 posts, I would not have believed you. It is fitting that my 100th post is about May’s Full Moon. On paper, this full moon had the potential to be great: it was going to line up perfectly over the Coit tower, the timing was perfect, exactly 32 minutes after sunset (so the sky would be a great blue) and it would really be a full moon (30 minutes later). I forgot one thing, it is summer here now in San Francisco, which means that Karl the fog is present. I was hoping all day that it would stay cool so the fog would stay away. When the moon showed up, it was looking good but in a couple minutes as the moon was rising, the fog was moving in. In a matter of minutes, I...

March Full moon: over the Coit Tower

March Full moon: over the Coit Tower

Did you see the full moon yesterday? This month, the moon was rising over the Coit Tower in San Francisco. The ideal point was between Lombart St. and Chestnut St. Unfortunately there is no open view between those two streets, buildings are lining up the streets and keeping the view for themselves. I got on top of Lombart right before sunset. The cable car stops right here, with the gold light of the sunset it was great, candid shot. Even the Coit tower was basked in warm light, but I was looking for a better location. I could not find any, so I went back to Lombart St. and found a spot that was the closest to buildings as possible, while still having a view. When the moon rose, it was on the left of the tower but too close to the tower. This confirmed what I...

July supermoon in San Francisco

July supermoon in San Francisco

This year’s “supermoon” was on Saturday, July 12. A supermoon is when the Moon’s orbit brings it closer to the Earth (at the perigee) and make it appear larger (especially when it’s full moon and at moon rise). In San Francisco, any summer full moon is a challenging situation to photograph. The summer fog can play troublemaker and block any moon rise. My plan for that supermoon rise was to take a picture of the Moon sitting on top of the Coit Tower. Saturday night was a typical summer evening in San Francisco, cool, windy and with the fog rolling in. As I was waiting for the Moon to rise I took a couple images to show you the fog rolling in over the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin headlands. The East Bay was still visible and I...
